Faneromeni Monastery

Built near Lefkada Town, the Monastery of Faneromeny is one of the most famous monasteries of the Island. This Monastery has a very important role in the local religious life and bares a long history. It was built in 1634 but its church was rebuilt later on due to some fires and it was recently renovated. In one of the new building of the Monastery is housed the Museum of Ecclesiastic Art. A lot of pilgrims visit the Monastery in order to pray and praise God opposite the Holy Rock.

Agios Georgios Monastery

Agios Georgios Monastery was established in 1911 and it has also a long history. Its location is near Kollyvata Village on the northwest part of Lefkada. The Monastery used to have a great heritage of farms, animals and a significant part of land (708 sq.m). On its interior, visitors can admire the hagiographies and the iconostasis which is a replica of the one that is found on Agios Minas Church.

Agios Ioannis Prodromos Monastery

The Monastery of Agios Ioannis Prodromos was built in 1906 on a hill in Karya Village. It was a rich Monastery with significant heritage and as a result, it had a great influence not only in the island’s economic aspect of life, but in the local cultural development and spiritual life too. Nowadays, the Monastery’s Church has been renovated, its painting are also well preserved and it includes a different seating space for the two sexes, male and female visitors. The paintings depict bodies and faces of the Orthodox Saints, however, some of the holy figures have been eroded over the past years.

Monastery Evangelistria’s Red Church

Evangelistria’s Red Church constitutes one of the most historic Monasteries in Lefkada, situated in Platistoma. In the Church’s interior, there are great orthodox icons and the significant iconostasis which is made of wood. This Monastery was built in 1478 with use of several natural materials, such as stones and red clay, which justifies its given name “Red Church”. Moreover, the Monastery has impressive wealth and it is a famous and definitely worth visiting monument in Lefkada due to its religious content.

Agios Ioannis Monastery

Agios Ioannis is a popular well preserved Monastery in Rodaki of Lefkada. It was built by the monk Xamosfakidis in 1654 and inside the church, visitors can observe the impressive wall paintings. There is also a rumor, that a couple can have a child, if the husband and wife pray on the Church of the Monastery.

Agios Nikolaos Niras Monastery

This Orthodox Monastery is situated in Athani Village. It was build in 1637 by some local families and it had a big property. The Monastery’s hagiographies were created by Betzos, Diskaris and other hagiographers and they are well preserved.
